The upcoming World War I epic 1917 from the Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes is expected to be yet another promising project from a prolific filmmaker. The trailer is just released, and it looks intense, as we see glimpses of Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch in some key roles.
Sam Mendes, the winner of the Academy Award for Best Director for the film American Beauty (1999) and the director of films such as Skyfall, Spectre, and Revolutionary Road, has this time a powerful historical story to tell. Other than directing and producing, he also has co-written the screenplay of the film.
The director is coming back to the war genre for the first time since the 2005-released biographical war drama Jarhead. While it was more on the psychological challenges of wartime, 1917 seems more into action, as it follows two British soldiers and their harrowing experience in fighting the war.

The story of 1917 is about two young British soldiers Schofield (George MacKay of Captain Fantastic) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman of Game of Thrones) who are assigned an impossible mission in the height of World War I.
In those tense-filled moments and bombs falling all around, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop an imminent attack on hundreds of soldiers, including Blake’s own brother.
Considering a war film, 1917 has an ensemble cast – including George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Claire Duburcq, Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Universal Pictures announced to first release the film in the UK on December 25, 2019, and then worldwide release on January 10, 2020.
