‘Parasite’ and ‘1917’ steal the show, Phoenix wins as expected

The South Korean comedy thriller “Parasite” won four while Sam Mendes’ World War I drama “1917” won three to lead the 92nd Academy Awards (the Oscar 2020) race. And as expected Joaquin Phoenix won the Best Actor for “Joker,” while Renée Zellweger won the Best Actress for her portrayal of Judy Garland in “Judy.”

The Korean film was indeed the fan-favorite underdog that certainly must have surprised many by winning the Best Picture, but it also won Best Original Screenplay, Best International Film, and the Best Director. How interesting and exciting it might sound that it also became the first foreign-language film to win the top award.

Well, the evening was also good for actors like Brad Pitt who won the Best Supporting Actor, for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” while Laura Dern won the Best Supporting Actress for “Marriage Story”.

“[We have to] continue to use our voice for the voiceless. I’ve been thinking a lot about some of the distressing issues that we are facing collectively. I think at times we feel, or were made to feel, that we champion different causes, but for me, I see commonality. I think, whether we’re talking about gender inequality or racism or queer rights or indigenous rights or animal rights, we’re talking about the fight against injustice. We’re talking about the fight against the belief that one nation, one people, one race, one gender or one species has the right to dominate, control and use and exploit another with impunity.”
