A Dream Come True, Studio Ghibli Masterpieces On Netflix

For all the Studio Ghibli fans, here is a piece of amazing news: Netflix will release 21 Ghibli masterpieces around the world.

The streaming giant in a press release has announced that beginning February 1, as many as 21 films of the Academy Award®-winning Japanese art house, will be made available for streaming globally (excluding US, Canada, Japan). For this, Netflix is partnering with independent film sales company Wild Bunch International.

Well, for long, we all were wondering about this deal between Netflix and Studio Ghibli, as very few are available at present. Considering the huge Ghibli fanbase, this is indeed a great opportunity for Netflix as well as Ghibli to make the films available on a legitimate streaming platform.

While these will not be available for streaming in the United States, Canada and Japan (probably, there are other ways to stream there), this deal is more to cater to Netflix’s ever-increasing subscriber base in the Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

So, we will now be able to watch several classics such as Academy Award®-winner Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Arrietty, Kiki’s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, among others.

Moreover, these films will also be available with 20 native languages and be subtitled in a total of 28 languages.

“In this day and age, there are various great ways a film can reach audiences. We’ve listened to our fans and have made the definitive decision to stream our film catalog. We hope people around the world will discover the world of Studio Ghibli through this experience”.

– Producer Toshio Suzuki at Studio Ghibli

In a press statement, Director of Original Animation at Netflix, Aram Yacoubian, said:

“This is a dream come true for Netflix and millions of our members. Studio Ghibli’s animated films are legendary and have enthralled fans around the world for over 35 years. We’re excited to make them available in more languages across Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia – so that more people can enjoy this whimsical and wonderful world of animation.”
