‘Lucifer’ – A Malayalam Political Thriller Starring Mohanlal

The Mohanlal-starrer Malayalam language movie ‘Lucifer’ has crossed Rs. 200 crores at the box office and this is indeed a great feat for actor-turned-director Prithviraj who is also planning to create a sequel to this.

The film is now streaming on Amazon Prime in three different Indian regional languages (Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu). One of the interesting aspects of this political thriller is that it has Mohanlal – one of the finest actors in Malayalam cinema, who enjoys superstardom like no other.

Here is the movie trailer for ‘Lucifer’

‘Lucifer’ – A Short Review

Stephen Nedumpally, a mysterious character with no clear backstory, is in a church asking the father to confess the crime he is yet to commit. Strange it may sound, but that is how the character is with a heavy face, yet with humanity to serve the needy.

The film draws vaguely from the biblical character Lucifer, the fallen angel, however, Stephen never had that strong desire for honor and glory or compared himself to any higher authority. He is rather humane although he felt cast out by family and circumstances.

Nevertheless, the film takes a turn very quickly from the usual family drama to a political thriller. This is where the director very intelligently sketched his characters and delivered an impressive narration.

‘Lucifer’ is a story of family bonding and at the same time conspiracy and betrayal in a battle of succession. The film has a good plotline which it indeed carries most of the time; however – there are too many subplots.

We have a family history, drama, political conspiracy, drug trafficking, and then a revenge story. With so much coming together, the performance of both Mohanlal (as the invincible Stephen) and Manju Warrier in two prominent roles makes it worth a watch.

In the end, Lucifer leaves scope for a sequel – however, there should be an interesting storyline to take this forward. Hopefully, we will get to know some kind of backstory to Stephen and more shades of the character to justify the reference to biblical Lucifer.
