Polar (2019) – Netflix’s hyper-violent action adventure

Mads Mikkelsen starrer Netflix action film POLAR

Mads Mikkelsen starrer new Netflix original action flick ‘Polar’ has everything from sex, guns, brutality to just enough drama you need in a blood-splattered action film.

Netflix already has its 2019 opening shot with ‘Close’, but with ‘Polar’ it now has a gorier action film after last year’s super successful ultra-bloodshed action fest ‘The Night Comes for Us’. Although ‘Polar’ is much different in terms of story and action, the film has some wonderfully choreographed action scenes.

‘Polar’ is all about Mads Mikkelsen’s character Duncan Vizla aka Black Kaiser an assassin working for an organization Damocles. He is on the verge of retirement, but his boss thinks that he has now become a liability for the company and hence should be eliminated.

As per the rules of his organization, once any assassin dies or retires without declaring a legal heir, his earnings go to the company itself. So, as the greedy boss sends hit squads to kill Duncan, what is inevitable is ought to happen in their tainted business.

Duncan, not only has to keep his wish alive to spend a good retirement life but also to protect his neighbor, Camille (Vanessa Hudgens) who is struggling to cope up with her own personal trauma. He does not want her to be collateral damage in a fight that has nothing to do with her.

While most part of the film only shows action just like the John Wick saga, the film offers little in terms of story. If you like action movies and you are a fan of Mads Mikkelsen, who recently starred in 2016’s Doctor Strange as Kaecilius, then you may watch this.

Nevertheless, ‘Polar’ is no doubt a fun and entertaining watch. The film is based on the 2012 graphic novels by Victor Santos. The characters are flashy and colorful, and the action is slick and stylish with more than a few sadistic characters. Probably, the story around the character could have been a much elaborate one. Who knows, we might even get a sequel to this.
