Netflix will launch the first Japanese live-action original series ‘Followers’ globally on February 27, 2020. Tokyo-based photographer and filmmaker Mika Ninagawa (Diner, No Longer Human) directs this new drama that captures the distinct and vibrant lifestyle of women living in Japan’s capital city.
The nine-episode long ‘Followers’ has an original story that depicts Tokyo as a vibrant city full of life, glitz, glamour, ambition, and fashion. The storyline follows a few women characters, who are influenced by city life and modern culture, and how it shapes their relationships, ambition, and lives in general.
Primarily, the storyline focuses on Limi, a prominent fashion photographer, who has reached her fame by capturing the ever-evolving energetic people, as well as the city of present-day Tokyo, considered as the economic and cultural center of Japan. Limi is successful, independent, and lives a confident life.
On the other side, we have a young, aspiring actress Natsume, who is yet to find her share of success and identity that impacts her personal as well as professional life.
Things change instantly when Natsume finds fame and recognition from Limi by posting a candid photo of her on Instagram. This sudden celebrity status would not only affect the lives of Limi and Natsume but also in some ways would make an impact on the lives of the men and women around them.
There is a fight to stay relevant in an ever-demanding society and community while following their hearts, dreams, and social media presence. With some love on the side, these women are looking for their own style and meaning of happiness.
‘Followers’ also presents the friendships of Limi with her manager Yuruco, an entrepreneur Eriko, a manager of the popular singer Sayo Akane, and Natsume with an aspiring artist Sunny, generous Nori, and a popular YouTuber Hiraku.
