Rob Reiner‘s Shock and Awe is going to show the minority side of America which believed that George Bush’s planned invasion of Iraq was indeed a mistake even before it happened. While most of the American media was swayed by the government rhetoric about the existence of “weapons of mass destruction” in Iraq, there are only few, who believed otherwise and knew that it was going to be a disaster.
This Woody Harrelson and James Marsden (as Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel) starrer thriller will follow a group of journalists covering George Bush’s planned invasion of Iraq in 2003 and who are questioning of the president’s claim that Saddam Hussein has “weapons of mass destruction.” Indeed the world was in shock but those few brave scribes from the Knight Rider newspaper were right. Well, although we know that Shock and Awe is a true story, we are not too sure to what extent it’s going to be fictionalized.
Iraq invasion has been a subject of discussion in the last one and half decade. Establishments have been wary of the prospect of war under any circumstances, although the present Trump administration is pushing countries like Iran and North Korea to shun their nuclear weapon programmers – but it’s never an easy solution. Many events have followed after the Iraq war, including U.S. military campaign in across the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa but the question remains the same. Some lacs vision, but looking at the humanity and world at large, great powers need to be very much careful and should have justification for any conflict.
Shock and Awe in a way is a reminder to the superpowers – how it’s important to analyze the need of the war and find a justification in order to be not listed on the wrong side of the history. We all know that Saddam Hussein’s alleged possession of weapons of mass destruction was an excuse for the 2003 invasion of Iraq that had profound effect on United States economy. With that the work of peace was certainly left behind, while the world is still struggling of militancy, terror threats emanating from Iraq, and also the failure in converting Iraq to a stable democracy.
Nevertheless, we will know more about this particular episode when we get to watch the movie on DirecTV on June 14, and see it in cinemas starting July 13, 2018.
