'The Turning' (Trailer) - Henry James' Classic Ghost Story

Director Floria Sigismondi’s upcoming film “The Turning,” an adaptation of Henry James’ 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw, looks chilling and promising in the trailer. The film is slated for a January 24, 2020 release.

Over the last few decades, several filmmakers have narrated different versions of the story, mostly inspired by the book. These include the 1961 movie The Innocents, The Nightcomers (1972), British television film The Turn of the Screw (2009), a few more direct adaptations, and the Nicole Kidman-starrer The Others which was loosely based on the book.

Here is the trailer of ‘The Turning’ – Starring Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard

In the trailer, we’re introduced to Kate (Mackenzie Davis) as a nanny who gets a job to take care of two orphans – Flora and Miles – in a wealthy yet mysterious estate in the Maine countryside. In the next few clips, we see glimpses of paranormal activities that unsettle Kate’s life, by revealing some sinister secrets of the house as well as the kids.

As one kid says in the film “..keeping the lights on won’t keep you safe..”, the film is expected to be a creepy fest, as the makers are bringing back this classic ghost story that time again has terrified the readers, as well as those, who have watched films based on the storyline.

‘The Turning’ is also expected to be good, as its director Floria Sigismondi is already known for her earlier projects, such as The Runaways, The Handmaid’s Tale, American Gods, etc. This haunted-house thriller in the trailer also looks interesting because the story is now set in modern times.

While the black and white classic ‘The Innocents’ is considered one of the finest horror movies in history, it would be interesting to see how the newer adaptation will be narrating the story without overusing modern technology and integrating many horror film clichés. Directed by Jack Clayton, that was a masterpiece with great use of photography, narration, sound, and the psychoanalytical approach.

The screenplay of ‘The Turning’ is written by Chad Hayes & Carey W. Hayes (The Conjuring) and produced by Scott Bernstein (Straight Outta Compton, Ride Along 2) and Roy Lee (It, The Lego Movie).
