‘71 – A Survival Thriller (Trailer)

'71 (2014) _ Movie

Jack O’Connell’s action thriller ’71 is released in some parts of the world, including Ireland and UK. Although I’m yet to watch the movie here in India (don’t know whether they have a release here or not), I would like you all to watch the trailer of the film which seems very promising. Directed by Yann Demange, this British historical action film is set in Northern Ireland, and it’s a conflict-prone atmosphere between Catholics and Protestants.

However, the film as we can see in the trailer is about a young British soldier (played by Jack O’Connell) who is accidentally left behind by his unit following a riot on the streets of Belfast in 1971. Unknown to the deadly streets with people from both communities at war, the young soldier has to survive the night and find ways to his barracks.

’71 takes place over a single night in Belfast where British troops were deployed as an emergency peacekeeping force in the wake of a conflict between Protestant Loyalists and Catholic Nationalists.

Just to mention here, the decades-long Belfast conflict starts in the second half of 19th century when Catholics began to migrate to the capital city in search of work and a better living. However, over the years the migration brought sectarian violence between the minority Catholics and majority Protestants in Northern Ireland. During 1969 and 1971, there had been numerous reports of violence and riots; as a result British army was deployed to restore order and state control. Such conflicts continued for next 30 years until the 1998 Belfast “Good Friday” Agreement. To know more about the history, please follow the Wikipedia page The Troubles.
