Small Town Crime (2017) – Movie Review

Small Town Crime (2017) – Movie Review - Starring Robert Forster and John Hawkes

An alcoholic ex-cop when sees a dying woman lying on the roadside, through an act of self-redemption, finds a purpose in his life to track down her killer, but the path is not so easy.

Starring Robert Forster and John Hawkes, this slick thriller follows a disgraced ex-cop Mike Kendall (John Hawkes) who when discovers a dying woman, finds himself compelled to follow the trail of a killer but in doing so he puts his family and friends in danger.

While Mike’s cop friends do not want him to do anything stupid – citing his disturbed alcoholic life, an act of self-redemption takes over his thoughts in finding the truth behind the murder.

Mike follows the case with all his resources to find not just one, but many involved in this small-town crime, but certainly big enough to bring trouble to the former cop and his family.

The plotline of “Small Town Crime” looks simple with some familiar characters, yet it has its moments with things like an ex-cop looking for work yet spending time drinking in a pub. He, however, has his composer and good self intact to transport a badly beaten woman to a hospital and like a good lawman, he now must find the answer to many questions.

The film has some fine side characters, even though not entirely developed, and those sip into the storyline very nicely. While it’s Hawkes’ character on which the story revolves, you would certainly like Octavia Spencer, who plays Mike’s sister, and Robert Forster who plays the rich grandfather of the deceased woman. They leave their mark in a single character-driven story.

We have many such slick and beautiful thrillers with not-so-impressive or unique plotlines yet have managed to be likable and “Small Town Crime” is amongst one of those. Hawkes as the lead has delivered an exceptionally good performance, as a small-town private investigator, an unlikely hero, with enough resources to hunt down the bad guys involved with some serious crimes.
