‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ (Netflix Series Review)

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Netflix’s “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is a supernatural horror series following teen Sabrina, half-human, and half-witch with magical powers. Based on the comic book series of the same name (by Archie Comics), the story centers around Sabrina Spellman, the teenage witch. The adaption in its first season takes us through the origin and adventure, where Kiernan Shipka plays the titular character.

In its first season, we see the story gradually moving to the ultimate goal of the teenage witch who not only wants power but also freedom. However, the path to gain both doesn’t look all even when she must choose either of her mortal self or submit herself to Satan and become a witch.

In the first few episodes, we see her effort in trying to learn about her roots and how she first rejects the demand of the Dark Lord by not signing in the Book of the Beast and partially succeeds in bargaining with the dark community. She even joins the Academy for Unseen Arts without signing into the Dark Baptism ritual.

Nevertheless, while the series looks not all perfect – it gives you enough to cheer with some interesting characters and the right amount of suspense and horror elements.

“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” warrants patience to watch the expected action, as it takes almost five episodes in building all characters. In the initial few, the elements of witchcraft are minimal – mostly controlled by the other realm.

Other than witchcraft the series also shows some beautiful relationships of Sabrina with her aunts, her cousin Ambrose, and friends – particularly her love interest Harvey.

Chapter One: October Country

We are introduced to the magical teen Sabrina Spellman, about to turn 16. She enjoys her school days with friends, particularly her boyfriend Harvey, but she must accept the reality and think of her obligation in embracing her witch half. She must try to move away from her friends as she prepares for a dark baptism and show her allegiance to Dark Lord Satan. Then she must now convince her human half to renounce any connection to the mortal world, as at the stroke of midnight she must leave her girlhood behind and become a witch.

Chapter Two: The Dark Baptism

Considering her attachments to mortal friends, Sabrina had many doubts over her Dark Baptism for which she has many more questions. So, she is visited by Father Blackwood, the high priest of the Dark Lord, who convinces her to go for the baptism and attend the Academy for Unseen Arts. Meanwhile, Sabrina’s cousin Ambrose, who was dealing with a dead body for the Spellman funeral home, believes that the body is not of a human but a warlock – possibly killed by a witch hunter. Sabrina, on the other side, tries to help one of her mortal friends, Susie, who is being bullied by four boys from her school. She takes the help of the three Weird Sisters to teach them a lesson. Finally, on the night of Sabrina’s birthday, she runs away from the Dark Baptism ritual.

Chapter Three: The Trial of Sabrina Spellman

Sabrina must now deal with the consequences of not signing in the Book of the Beast thereby guilty of breaking her promise, her pledge, to the Dark Lord. She is now summoned for a public trial to be judged in the Court of the Witches. Aunt Zelda and Hilda have also been stripped of their powers during the trial, as they both failed the Dark Lord. Now, the Spellman family must prove that they are not guilty. Witch law puts them ‘as guilty until proven innocent.’ Sabrina now must find someone who will defend her in court. A man named Daniel Webster, a lawyer and oculist, who specializes in witch law must now come to her rescue.

Chapter Four: Witch Academy

Once Sabrina enters The Academy of Unseen Arts, she shows interest in joining the conjuring class, but Blackwood asks her to successfully solve a puzzle as a pretest to attend the higher classes. Sabrina gets to know from her friend Nick that the puzzle, known as Acheron Configuration, was created by Sabrina’s father. Meanwhile, the Weird Sisters have forced Sabrina to also endure a terrifying ritual known as harrowing that has been previously the cause of death of many students. She, with the help of aunt Hilda, will now help the ghosts of dead students to take revenge. Aunt Hilda also helps Ambrose in an astral projection so he may go on a date with Luke but that nearly goes wrong. In the meantime, Madam Satan arrives and searches the Spellman house to take different pieces of stuff from Sabrina to apply some spells and spy on her.

A mysterious demon wreaks havoc on Spellman Mortuary. Sabrina goes rogue and puts her powers to the test.

Chapter Six: An Exorcism in Greendale
