Anemone (2025): Daniel Day-Lewis Makes His Much-Awaited Comeback

After an eight-year hiatus, Daniel Day-Lewis returns to the silver screen in Anemone, an emotionally charged family drama directed by his son Ronan Day-Lewis. This highly anticipated film marks Daniel Day-Lewis’s first acting role since his retirement in 2017 and promises a deeply moving exploration of brotherhood and personal history.

Anemone will premiere at the 2025 New York Film Festival on September 26, 2025. It will then have a limited theatrical release in the United States on October 3, 2025, before expanding nationwide on October 10, 2025.

Synopsis

Anemone centers on Jem Stoker (Sean Bean), a man who leaves his suburban life for a journey into the remote woods of Northern England, where he reunites with his estranged, reclusive brother Ray (Daniel Day-Lewis). Their fraught relationship, shaped by traumatic events from the past, unfolds amid haunting natural landscapes, promising a mesmerizing tale of family bonds, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

The film also stars Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green, with cinematography by Ben Fordesman. It is co-written by Daniel and Ronan Day-Lewis, marking Ronan’s directorial debut.

While the film has not yet been released, anticipation is high given Daniel Day-Lewis’s legendary reputation and his collaboration with his son. Anemone is expected to be a visually striking and emotionally resonant drama examining complex family dynamics.
