“Crimes of the Future” (2022) – From Horror Legend David Cronenberg

Screened at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, “Crimes of the Future” is yet another science-fiction body horror film from horror legend David Cronenberg, known for exploring themes related to the visceral bodily transformation that often implies extreme modifications or physical damage to the characters.

“Crimes of the Future” Synopsis

As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner, Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), a celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – was to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.

“Crimes of the Future” is set in a dystopian future where widespread microplastics and a society that relies heavily on synthetic materials have pushed new directions in human evolution.

Surgery transforms into a public performance art form when humans develop previously unknown organs. Societal divisions arise in response to divergent views about the direction humanity should go. And, it all comes together in a peculiar manner, with human connection at its core.

The film stars Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, and Scott Speedman.
