Darkland (Danish: Underverden) – Revenge Drama

Darkland (Danish: Underverden) Movie Poster

Set in the Danish capital city of Copenhagen, ‘Darkland’ (Danish: Underverden) follows a doctor Zaid who loses his younger brother in a gang-related assault and then gives up his privileged life to avenge his brother’s death.

Zaid enjoys his successful life as a doctor and lives with his lovely wife who is expecting a baby soon. One evening, his younger brother Yasin comes to Zaid’s home desperately asking for money, but Zaid rejects him blank the door. Shortly after, Yasin is found severely wounded and later succumbed to his injury.

Overwhelmed with sadness, Zaid starts feeling guilty for not helping his brother in his time of need. Nevertheless, he soon came to know that his brother was involved in some organized crime, and the kingpin – involved in luring young men into drug activities, robbery, and other criminal activities – was behind the killing of Yasin.

With cops taking no strong action to find out the killer, Zaid decided to move down to the dirty streets of Copenhagen underworld to obtain justice for his deceased brother, but not before dragging his family and friends into danger.

Darkland (Danish: Underverden) – A Short Review

With no prior info on the storyline or the actors onscreen, and with little knowledge of Danish films, I found Darkland – a very interesting movie to watch. As a revenge thriller, the film is thoroughly entertaining, as it takes you right into the criminal world of Copenhagen.

Director Fenar Ahmad has designed every other scene very pertinently to compliment the story with solid action. No doubt, the acting by Dar Salim is amazing with his transformation from a family man to a ruthless man when killing the criminals.

Darkland (Underverden) is also well-supported by other casts, including Stine Fischer Christensen as Zaid’s wife and Dulfi Al-Jabouri, who plays Yasin’s friend. It is refreshing as it doesn’t show any superhuman act, and the story very much complements the acts on screen, including Zaid’s martial arts background.

I am sure, many of us must have watched such a crime thriller with not so complicated storyline (also read: A Prophet (Un prophete) – a French prison thriller), but Darkland is different in terms of treatment, performance from its lead character, and portrayal of a doctor turned punisher, who is determined to find and kill those responsible for his brother’s death.
