‘I Am Heath Ledger’ – Celebrating the Life of a True Artist

The documentary I Am Heath Ledger introduces you to many facets of this wonderfully gifted actor who has left an everlasting impact in his short life. Yes, this documentary on Heath Ledger will for sure make you emotional while reminding you of some of his finest performances.

It was on 22 January 2008 (aged 28) that he died of an overdose of prescription drugs.

In the trailer, we can see the late actor with a handheld camcorder in his hand. His passion seems something else other than acting, and as some of his friends mentioned – ‘he is a born director, a fearless actor and an unforgettable artist.’

I Am Heath Ledger – A celebration of his life

I Am Heath Ledger narrates the stories of this incredible actor through interviews with his friends and family, including some known faces such as musician Ben Harper, director Ang Lee, model Naomi Watts (who was also in a relationship with the actor), Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn, among others. The trailer also shows Heath capturing moments on his camera.

The documentary is certainly an attempt to celebrate the life of this artist who was not only great in acting but was equally talented behind the camera. Ledger was one of the greatest artists of his generation and that was evident in his last onscreen appearance as the demonic Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

In the trailer we can see musician Ben Harper, saying: “Heath was the most alive human, and if it wasn’t on the edge, it didn’t interest him.”

And in another shot, model Christina Cauchi recalls, “There were always cameras around … that’s the only way I think of him—with the camera in the hand.”

His childhood friend Trevor DiCarlo says, “He was always a director, acting was just a way to get there.”

Ang Lee, who directed Ledger in the 2005 neo-western same-sex love story Brokeback Mountain, says: “Even as a supporting actor he will steal the whole show. That’s the power of Heath Ledger.”

Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn says: “Before Brokeback Mountain came out it would have been unthinkable to have a romantic tragedy involving two gay cowboys. This is one of the biggest heartthrobs on Earth taking on that character – that’s an artist.”

Directed by Derik Murray, I Am Heath Ledger premieres on April 23rd at the Tribeca Film Festival and will have a limited theatrical release in the United States on May 3rd and then will be aired on May 17th on Spike.
