So, here is another haunted house story The Last House on Cemetery Lane but with a little different story to tell unlike those others filled with too many jump scare moments. Directed by British filmmaker Andrew Jones, known for scripting and directing horror films, this has been released lately on DVD and other digital platforms.
The film follows a London based screenwriter John Davies who has drove down to the countryside in search a peaceful place where he could write his next story for a horror film. As he finally meets the owner of an old mansion in a sleepy West Wales village, he discovers that the three storey house where he is going to live has already a guest in it. However strange and spooky it may sound, the owner does not divulge much information on the occupant other than that she is an old blind woman who has been living here for long and doesn’t socialise much.
Nevertheless, the place looks good one for John and he even meets his beautiful friendly neighbour Cassie Konrad. But as it’s a haunted house tale, sooner or later he has to experience the truth of the house. John discovers strange noise and unexplained occurrences that further compels him to explore more on the history of the house. What he discovers later is more terrible than he ever imagined. It is now up to John to right the injustices of the past and finally lay to rest the spirits which haunt The Last House on Cemetery Lane.
Although a low budget independent horror film, it somehow begins well with an actual story to tell with a little twist in the end that somehow tries to saves the faulty narration. However, my big disappointment is the horror elements which I believe lack intensity to actually scare you enough. And also the final few minutes are not convincing enough in terms of storytelling and filming.
