What’s the film ‘I Am What I Am’ about?

Kasumi, a 30-year-old who has given up on her dream of becoming a professional cellist, returns to her family home, where she lives with her parents and grandmother while working a mundane call center job. Unlike the people around her, Kasumi has no interest in romance or marriage, and she often feels misunderstood by those who assume she must be lonely. As her mother pressures her to find a partner, Kasumi remains steadfast in her desire to live a life free from societal expectations.

The story takes a turn when Kasumi reconnects with an old friend, played by MAEDA Atsuko (former AKB48 member). This friendship becomes a source of strength, allowing Kasumi to confront her true desires and challenge the prejudices and expectations of those around her. The film provides a warm and humanistic exploration of living authentically in a world that often misunderstands or dismisses alternative life choices.
