The renowned American Express Gala selection for the 67th BFI London Film Festival has been announced, and it is “One Life.” On October 12, 2023, at the Royal Festival Hall of the Southbank Centre, the movie, which is helmed by James Hawes and stars Anthony Hopkins, will have its European premiere.
Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of Sir Nicholas “Nicky” Winton, who lived an extraordinary true story, is brought to life in the film “One Life.” The movie focuses on Winton’s heroic efforts leading up to World War II, when he organized the liberation of 669 kids from the evil Nazi regime.
Winton came across people who had escaped Nazi Germany and Austria while visiting Prague in 1938. Winton organized a group to save as many children as possible before borders closed despite the desperate circumstances and impending Nazi threat. The movie also looks at Winton’s post-war life, which was characterized by guilt over the lives he was unable to save until a surreal meeting with his living children on a live BBC television program gave him closure.
The movie’s director, James Hawes, expressed his gratitude for having “One Life” shown at the event and emphasized how closely the movie relates to London’s past and present. The film, which was produced by See-Saw Films and BBC Film, is an appropriate selection for the BFI London Film Festival since it captures the spirit of the city.
The production studio, See-Saw Films, expressed their enthusiasm for telling Winton’s tale. The movie “One Life” follows in the footsteps of past American Express Gala selections “The King’s Speech,” “Lion,” and “The Power of the Dog.”
Kristy Matheson, BFI London Film Festival Director, praised the film’s emotional depth and Hopkins’ performance, emphasizing its relevance in showcasing the power of personal acts defending human rights.
“One Life” from Warner Bros. Pictures is slated to premiere on January 5 in UK cinemas. From October 4 to October 15, 2023, the 67th BFI London Film Festival will include films of the highest caliber at renowned London locations and internationally.
