“Into the Night” – An Edge of the Seat Sci-Fi Survival Thriller (Netflix)

The new Netflix sci-fi series “Into the Night” is an edge-of-your-seat survival thriller that follows a group of strangers of different nationalities trying to avoid the imminent danger of a calamitous solar event.

Based on the Polish novel The Old Axolotl by Jacek Dukaj, this six-episode Belgian series “Into the Night”, in its first season, has caught the attention of viewers with its interesting science fiction plotline and fast-paced narration that together leaves us wanting for more.

What is the story of “Into the Night”?

“Into the Night” starts with a group of passengers who are hijacked while onboard an overnight flight from Brussels heading West. Soon it sets the tone, as the man who hijacked the flight at gunpoint reveals the fact that a sudden solar event is killing every living being with the rise of the sun. While for now, they are all safe under the cover of the night, they should continue flying to locations, running away from the sunlight.

The passengers and the flight crew have no other option but to rely on each other while finding solutions to many problems they come across. Each episode is named after a character and we get to know more details about them. The story, even though not in-depth, reveals the individual backstory of the characters as it builds up the drama and makes it more engaging.

What is to expect from “Into the Night”?

The series has everything that you can expect, including a suspenseful plotline, concerning an apocalyptic cosmic event, brief characterization in a multi-subplot storyline, and adrenaline-pumping thrill and drama.

One of the finest parts of “Into the Night” is that anything happening on screen does not appear overdramatic or incoherent. While the narrative style has squeezed the events, the pacing in storytelling and the cliffhanger ending of each episode make it impossible for us to leave the show before the climax.

Into the Night: Netflix’s first Belgian original series

The final episode ends leaving many more possibilities for the next season. As a sci-fi plot, it never dives deep into the scientific explanation of the mysterious event, however, with this short pilot season, we can at least hope for more tension and excitement as the story progresses.

Finally, we can only praise the performance of actors here who play diverse characters of different origins. Their chemistry is great to watch as they bond in their effort to avoid danger and survive at any cost. The performance is another positive point for the show to be a successful one, as they make the whole scenario believable in their roles. “Into the Night” might not be depth in characterization but with its fast-paced, it very well compensates for the brief background.
