If you are fond of horror movies, with the kind of original Exorcist, ‘Mama’ – directed by Andres Muschietti – is one of the finest of recent times. It tells about the story of two little girls abandoned in a forest and the pained soul of a mother who is still searching for her infant murdered sometime earlier.
After watching ‘Mama’, I would say that this is one of the scariest movies I have ever watched. Based on a 2008 Spanish language short film with the same name by Muschietti himself, it is all visually attractive in the midst of a chilling atmosphere.
The story goes with a disturbed fellow Jeffrey, who after killing his wife, leaves his house with his two little daughters until their car meets an accident in a snowy mountainous roadway. Survived in that accident, Jeffrey escapes into the forest and while he plans to kill his daughters and commit suicide, a strange creature comes out of the shadow and kills him sparing the girls.
Five years after the incident, Jeffrey’s brother (probably twin) Lucas, who has been searching for the girls ever since they went missing, finally finds the girls with the help of a search party, although in a very weird circumstance where the girls behave more like animals and less like humans.
As the doctor suggests improvements in the behavioral condition of the girls, Lucas and his rocker girlfriend Annabel bring the kids to their home. But as days pass by, strange things begin to happen with the girls talking to something mysterious and strange entity. What appears soon after is that the girls are not alone, they have brought with them a ghostly figure they call Mama.
In a wonderfully created spooky set-up, ‘Mama’ will surely catch your interest, if you survive those eerie visuals leaving a sense of impending menace. Director Muschietti portrayed it really well with his creative imagination, sans cheap gore or cliched ghost appearances.
