Cinephobia Releasing has acquired the distribution rights for the Spanish horror film, “The Coffee Table,” directed by Caye Casas. This bone-chilling tale, which goes beyond conventional horror, recently had its world premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, where it won the prestigious Best Film award in the Rebels with a Cause category. It also received recognition at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, winning the esteemed White Raven Prize, as well as Fantapoa Fest.
“The Coffee Table” revolves around a middle-aged couple, Jesus (David Pareja) and Maria (Estefanía de los Santos), who are grappling with relationship troubles while adjusting to their new roles as parents. In an attempt to give their lives a fresh start, they make the fateful decision to purchase a gaudy coffee table. Little do they know that this seemingly innocent furniture choice will plunge them into a nightmarish ordeal. The story takes a twisted turn when Jesus’ brother, Carlos (Josep Riera), and his girlfriend, Cristina (Claudia Riera), invite them over for dinner.
Casas masterfully crafts a terrifying narrative in “The Coffee Table,” delivering spine-tingling horror without relying heavily on on-screen violence. The film is said to delve into the darkest depths of human fear, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats. Reviewers have been cautioned against disclosing the film’s chilling twist in their critiques, adding an extra layer of intrigue to this horrifying experience.
North American audiences can anticipate the American festival premiere of “The Coffee Table” in September, where it will make its mark on the horror genre. Following its festival run, the film is set to have additional screenings throughout the fall. Fans eager to experience the bone-chilling tale from the comfort of their homes will have to wait until January, when “The Coffee Table” will be available on DVD and VOD platforms.
