First Kill (2017) – Bruce Willis as a corrupt cop

Bruce Willis' First Kill Movie Poster

Bruce Willis and Hayden Christensen starrer action thriller First Kill follows a Wall Street broker Will who takes his son Danny on a hunting trip in order to reconnect with his son. Their trip takes a wrong turn when they encounter a man getting shot by another one.

In the moment of confusion to figure out what’s happening, Will shot the other guy – who turns out to be a police officer – and takes the wounded to his home for treatment. However, to everyone’s surprise the wounded man, who is in fact a robber, takes control of the situation by taking hostage of Danny and demanded a key from Will.

In order to save his son from the robber, Will is forced to help the robber by misleading the cops. On the other hand, local Police Chief Howell becomes suspicious of Will’s action but there is more to the story than just a bank robbery and a hunting trip.

First Kill could have been a decent thriller if the director or story has more space for Bruce Willis, even though the idea of casting him as the bad guy seems out of synch. The story also comes with different layers, including the dubious idea – when it talks about Danny (Ty Shelton) as a kid who gets bullied in school, but here he is pushed to a situation with endless gun violence in order to get his confidence back.

The film also shows an unlikely robber who is sympathetic, and who kind of develops bonding with Danny. His side of story is not explored fully. While I must say that director Steven C. Miller somehow tries to bring quite a few subplots together but somehow failed to synch the overall ideas together.

In the end, First Kill is not the first kill of Danny or his dad Will. One positive thing about this movie can be the performance of the bank robber played by Gethin Anthony, while the acting of Hayden Christensen is decent.
