Based on the 2013 true-crime book by Charles Graeber (“The Good Nurse”), ‘Capturing the Killer Nurse’ is a new Netflix documentary detailing the insane act of Charles Cullen who admitted to killing between 30 and 40 of his patients whilst working as a nurse, but the actual number would be a few hundred.
Tim Travers Hawkins directs this documentary based on the true-crime book and tells how detectives were able to verify how Charles Cullen was killing patients while working as an ICU nurse in hospitals and nursing homes in the United States. The documentary uses real-life interviews with those closest to the case.
Charlie Cullen was a seasoned registered nurse who was well-liked and respected by his coworkers at Somerset Medical Center in New Jersey. He was also one of history’s most prolific serial killers, with probably hundreds of victims spread over numerous medical facilities in the Northeast.
Based on Charles Graeber’s best-selling novel The Good Nurse, which was recently adapted into a Netflix feature film starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne, this new documentary from Emmy-nominated director Tim Travers Hawkins reveals the twisted story behind Cullen’s hidden spree of murders.
Using audio from Cullen and emotional interviews with those closest to the events – including whistleblower and fellow nurse Amy Loughren, the detectives who cracked the case, author Graeber, and family members of the victims – the film traces how the truth was initially too shocking for anyone to comprehend, and how Cullen’s horrific actions highlight an even greater danger still lurking in our healthcare system.
