Good One (2024) – A Coming-of-Age Drama Rooted in Emotional Depth

India Donaldson makes a strong debut as a director with Good One, which combines a slow-burn coming-of-age story with a thorough look at family dynamics, power struggles, and personal growth. Set against the backdrop of a camping trip in upstate New York, the film features a strong performance by newbie Lily Collias.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21 and was released on August 9. It is currently scheduled for screening at the 68th BFI London Film Festival (October 9-20) and promises a dramatic cinematic experience.

What is Good One about?

Good One tells the story of 17-year-old Sam, who goes camping with her father Chris, and his longtime friend Matt. Initially, it appears to be a quiet trip, but as the weekend unfolds, tensions between the two men change the dynamic, pushing Sam to confront her impressions of them. This seemingly small incident transforms into a life-changing event for Sam, providing a thoughtful look at power, family bonds, and how we negotiate interpersonal conflict.

Good One – A short review of the film

India Donaldson’s Good One is a powerful debut with a strong sense of naturalism and emotional depth. Lily Collias shines as Sam, delivering a grounded yet transformative portrayal of a teen on the edge of adulthood.

The film shows how traditional masculinity, marked by control and emotional repression, creates tension and distance. Sam navigates the men’s flawed egos and becomes aware of their toxic traits. This awareness challenges her views on family and relationships.

The slow pacing allows the tension to build naturally, resulting in a contemplative atmosphere in which the characters’ psychological struggles can unfold. While not action-packed, the film captivates you with subtle shifts in tone, rich character development, and a sense of authenticity. Good One leaves viewers wondering how these interactions affect familial ties—many things are implied but profoundly felt.
