You Get Me, a Netflix Original produced by Awesomeness Films, is a romantic-psychological thriller involving a love triangle that takes a wrong turn with few uninspiring characters. Before we move to review the film or give more details of the storyline, let’s make it very clear that this movie caters to the young college-going kids, so might be a good pastime for some.
You Get Me from the very beginning is predicable. It seems you can easily guess what’s the next scene is going to be, even though it was advertised as to be a psychological thriller. Well, a psychological thriller needs to have something really messy going on with the characters that can actually keep you guessing, but here – it only involves someone who has some mental imbalance. So, here the movie fails to impress.
The storyline of the film follows a very happy couple Alison and Tyler, who are deeply in love with each other. Just the moment when everything looks perfect, Tyler gets to know about Alison’s dark past which pushes him to be with another girl named Holly and ended up having a one-night stand.
While Tyler takes his relation with Holly as just a casual encounter, Holly develops a dangerous obsession and constantly follows Tyler with desperation to keep their romance alive. Meanwhile, Tyler and Alison are able to come back together, which irks Holly that follows some dangerous events. Now, everyone in the lives of the perfect couple has to face the brunt of the troubled past of Holly – who now resorts to violence and cruelty.
This love triangle You Get Me is not that interesting considering we already have watched many such teenage dramas with ingredients of love, romance and troubling consequences. Everything we watch has become cliché in the genre. It has elements where for a moment it looks like moving to a thriller but not enough content to keep you involved. Well, nothing to be too critical, as we know it never tried to reach out to a larger audience, and the movie was well-paced to not drag the events unnecessarily.
Probably, the makers could have brought a little more characterization, backstory or enough act to keep ourselves out of the love triangle zone. A little imagination could have made it amusing for everyone. Nevertheless, young boys and girls can spend time on Netflix to watch this just for little fun. Lastly, one thing I must accept – I watched almost all the young actors for the first time, and I liked their performances.
