Indian National Award Winning Filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda’s film KADVI HAWA (Dark Wind in English) is considered as Bollywood’s first film on climate change. The film stars some of the finest actors of Hindi cinema, including the likes of Sanjai Mishra and Ranvir Shorey.

The film follows the life of a blind old farmer in a remote village in Rajasthan which is now affected by drought, and a young bank loan recovery agent who is ruthless and adamant in recovering loan money, even when many farmers have committed suicide with repeated crop failure and lack of rain.

KADVI HAWA certainly tries to catch the issue of climate change and how it affects many – particularly in an agrarian based society and economy. The film shows climate change while narrating stories of two different individuals from two different background and states, but they face the same issue of climate changes. On one hand, the farmer in Rajasthan is suffering because of lack of rain while on the other side, the bank agent and his family is affected by frequent cyclones in a coastal village in Odisha.

The story is indeed very touching as most in India and South Asia can relate to the ordeal and the effect of climate change, which is very much evident in this part of the world. KADVI HAWA is indeed a powerful tale about the very real danger of climate change.

The director of the film doesn’t want to teach people on any environmental issue or offer any solution, rather he wants to make the audience “conscious” about environment and how it is important for us to save whatever natural resource we have and not damage it further.
