Annabelle: Creation (2017) – Movie Review

Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle: Creation is a prequel to the first Conjuring movie, and as the name suggests it is also a prequel to the first spin-off Annabelle (2014). No doubt, The Conjuring movie franchise has been a success with some interesting ideas in play. With the Creation, the movie has taken us to the backstory of the doll which we’ve so far seen only in glimpses in previous films.

The story of Annabelle: Creation is set several years after the tragic death of the girl child of a dollmaker, when he and his wife welcome a nun and a group of girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home. Soon after, the girls — particularly a polio survivor Janice — start experiencing paranormal activities. Janice saw a possessed doll that literally attacked her multiple times.

As several weird things keep happening around, you get the sense that probably the dollmaker Mr. Samuel Mullins and his wife Esther are aware of the evil spirit in their house. Is it the dollmaker’s possessed creation, is the doll possessed by the spirit of their deceased daughter, or is it something else that keep on bothering the girls and the house owners?

Annabelle: Creation is very interesting with those unexpected scary scenes. Whether it’s the Conjuring film series or the two Annabelle spin-offs, the basic plot has been engaging with constant build up of suspense and thrill. However, this installment in the series even stands alone with a great story, acting and the unique ideas behind the scaring scenes.

The writing and acting by the young talents are indeed praiseworthy, while director David F. Sandberg continues his good run from his 2016 directorial debut Lights Out. Overall, Annabelle Creation is a great watch and much better than Annabelle (2014).
