Feed (2017) – A film on eating disorder Anorexia

Feed movie 2017

The movie Feed narrates the life of 18-year-old twins Olivia (Troian Bellisario) and Matthew Grey (Tom Felton) born in a world privileges and always under high expectations from parents. The film tries to show their bonding and how it becomes difficult for Olivia to lead her life when her brother dies in a car accident.

Even though the movie starts like a teenage drama and then builds up occasional thrill, it has a larger message in terms of Anorexia Nervosa, or what we call eating disorder in which a person strongly restrict herself/himself from food in fear of gaining weight.

Feed shows the struggle of Olivia played by Bellisario (who also wrote the story out of her personal experience with Anorexia) when she starts seeing her brother who tells her not to eat.

In medical science, doctors often associate the illness with some kind of emotional or psychological/psychopathology issue, when someone gets this compulsion of not to eat. As explained by Bellisario in an interview that with this illness – you just hear something in your head that tells you not to eat.

In the film, we see how Olivia struggles to cope with her personal loss and soon starts believing that her brother is still around her. Her brother Matthew restricts her in living her life and in a sense takes control of her.

While this type of narration is more to do with passing the overall message, the film and its story is based on scientific facts even though anorexia can be a result of other psychological causes, including depression, anxiety, loneliness, etc.

Nevertheless, Feed shows glimpses of the devastating effects of this abnormal patterns of eating behaviour and how people struggle to disengage themselves from the impulse of not to eat.
