Mary Magdalene (2017) – Releases in November

As per reports, the new biblical biopic Mary Magdalene, directed by Garth Davis, is set for a November release. With an impressive cast, we can only expect some the finest performances to justify the scriptural tale of Mary the Magdalene – one of the prominent figures of Christian faith and often referred to as one of the most revered saints.

When we talk about modern cinema or books, the reference of Mary Magdalene has been sometimes contradictory. The movies such as Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Temptation of Jesus Christ” (1988) and the reference in Dan Brown’s 2003 best-selling novel “The Da Vinci Code” are also not clear, and often drive many theories and debate.

For the cinematic sense it becomes very difficult for the makers to depict something i.e. either believable or completely fictional, when the subject matter is religious. In this case, as it is about one of the most elusive figures in Christianity, it would be interesting to see if the story onscreen takes a safer route or yet draws criticism from the Roman Catholic Church.

In general, the film will follow the life of Mary Magdalene, one of the female followers of Jesus Christ – who is said to have witnessed the crucifixion as well as the resurrection. In fact, as per John’s and Mark’s Gospels, she was the one who first saw the resurrection of Jesus.
