For anyone who is in love with Studio Ghibli films must have memories of its lovable characters, scenic landscape, humane stories and also its soulful music. You pick up any Ghibli movie, there is extraordinary songs and music complementing the storyline of the films. So, would not it be amazing to get all the mesmerizing songs and music at one place? Yes, Radio Ghibli is here with the iconic music covering 30 years of Studio Ghibli soundtracks.
Hayao Miyazaki’s creations and Joe Hisaishi’s music goes hand in hand. Whether it’s the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature film “Spirited Away” or the a heartwarming story of two little girls and their interaction with wood spirits in the film “My Neighbor Totoro”, music has always played a key part in the films.
Radio Ghibli is all about those interesting nostalgic music. It was, in fact, the London-based Internet radio station NTS Radio that first streamed an hour long music from some of the finest films of Studio Ghibli released between 1986 and 1992. This includes some of the classics, the best Ghibli films — Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Only Yesterday, and Porco Rosso. This mostly includes music created by Joe Hisaishi, Katsu Hoshi and Michio Mamiya.
Mixed by Sega Bodega, the first collection was an instant hit that followed two more. The second lot covered music from some of the films released in between 1994 and 2001. This period includes films like Pom Poko, My Neighbors the Yamadas, Whisper of the Heart, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. With this, some new music directors joined the list – Hiroko Ikuta, Kenji Miyazawa, Akin Yano, Shang Shang Typhoon, Manto Watanobe and more.
The third part of this music series is yet to come. Hopefully, this will be streaming later this year. And going by the films it has covered so far, the next part will for sure cover music from films released after 2002. This might include The Cat Returns, Howl’s Moving Castle, Tales From Earthsea, Ponyo, Arietty, From Up on Poppy Hill, The Wind Rises, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, and When Marnie Was There.
