Life (2017) – Science Fiction Horror Film (Review)

The recently released sci-fi thriller Life offers you an intense cinematic experience by taking forward the concept of alien or the existence of extraterrestrial beings. This time six multi-national space scientists aboard the International Space Station (ISS) discover life on Mars as they collected samples from the Red Planet and start experimenting on a single cell from the sample. As they were able to resurrect dormant alien cell, they found their lives in danger with the emergence of this utterly horrible creature.

Life is indeed terrifying and creepy as we ponder over the possibilities of an encounter of humans with aliens. The movie documents the rapidly growing alien creature and how it becomes the subject of destruction for all others on board the ISS. As the astronauts and scientists aboard the space station try to stop the danger from the alien, nick named Calvin, they find how extremely intelligent this creature can be, even in hostile atmosphere.

The movie directed by Daniel Espinosa, who is an unknown filmmaker in United States, managed to drive the story with constant thrill, violence and scary moments. While most film critics have given the film with not so favorable reviews, “Life” still is one of the interesting science-fiction movies of recent times. Overall, the execution and the director’s conviction in bringing in diverse characters, including that of Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds is amazing.

While many of us may think of the inclusion of stars like Jake and Ryan in such a formulaic alien movie, the gripping nature of the film proves it worthy. “Life” is not just an attempt to exhibit another alien creature in an extravagant film, rather it should be seen as an imaginative take of the earlier alien movies, or even Ridley Scott’s “Alien”, with enough real suspense and few unpredictable twists.

One of the most satisfying elements of the film is its characters as they all played their parts very convincingly. Every character in the film has got an equal part to play. If you love sci-fi movies, or say the alien movies, and don’t want to paint everything in comparison to 1979 Alien, then go for it. There is plenty of thrill to catch and of course that ending.
