This post is going to be very personal. The movie Gleason documents the life of sports personality (former NFL star) Steve Gleason who was diagnosed with ALS – also known as motor neuron disease (MND) – which has no definite cure in medical science. This is indeed heartrending to see someone in such condition as I have seen my father losing the battle to cancer a year back. I can only salute to the extraordinary human spirit that enables us to stand tough in the difficult most times and value our family and moment of togetherness, no matter what comes. My prayers are always with Gleason and his family.

Indeed, there is no triumph greater than the triumph of the human spirit. The film shows it all and proves it all with a strong heart. It’s emotionally draining, yet inspiring. However, I must ask everyone to watch it. Everyone must experience the hardship this brave man and his family go through in dealing with such an adverse time. It will make you cry and at the same time make you humble to value life, love, and family all the more. The documentary and the whole experience is unique and powerful.

There is nothing more specific to talk about in terms of filming or anything technical when you watch a documentary like this. “Gleason” is raw and real by opening up doors to the life of Gleason and family. It is a moving portrayal of human strength, power of hope and value of togetherness. Let me just give you a small synopsis of the movie:

At the age of 34, Steve Gleason, former NFL defensive back and New Orleans hero, was diagnosed with ALS. Doctors gave him two to five years to live. So that is what Steve chose to do: live. This film incorporates personal video journals from Gleason for his then-unborn son to footage of his adventures undertaken as part of his mission to live his life to the fullest.

Shortly after former New Orleans Saints star defensive back Steve Gleason is diagnosed with ALS at the age of 34, he learns that his wife Michel is pregnant with their first child. Determined to live his remaining years to its fullest, Steve goes on an expedition to Alaska, creates a foundation to help other ALS patients, repairs a rocky relationship with his father and embraces new technologies to help compensate for his deteriorating physical abilities — all with Michel’s unwavering support. Brimming with humor and heart, this inspirational documentary follows a man who battles overwhelming adversity to find his true purpose in life.
