‘1920 London’ – Hindi Horror Film Review

The Hindi-language horror flick 1920 London is the third installment in the 1920 film franchise [1920 (2008) and 1920: Evil Returns (2012)], starring Sharman Joshi & Meera Chopra. While the earlier two films had moderate success at the box office, this one is not better than its predecessors. It seems the director is obsessed with oversold, passé horror elements.

At the start of the film, we are introduced to Shivangi (Meera Chopra) and her husband Veer Singh (Vishal Karwal), who belong to some Indian royal families and are happily married and settled in London. Everything seems fine in their lives until Veer receives a locket as a gift from Rajasthan, India.

Strange things begin to happen with Veer, and Shivangi becomes increasingly worried about her husband’s deteriorating physical and mental condition. Convinced that it is black magic done on him, Shivangi decides to seek help from a spiritual healer named Jai (Sharman Joshi), who happens to be her ex-lover.

The film then shows Shivangi’s past with Jai and how he exorcises Veer to help him free him from some evil spirit. Shivangi in turn discovers many shocking truths along the way that shape the rest of the story.

Here is the movie trailer for ‘1920 London’

1920 London neither has a good storyline nor a good execution in terms of onscreen horror. There is hardly any real scare while the narrative tends to drag everything with unnecessary drama and songs that are only distractions.

Just like Hollywood films in which stories are now becoming repetitive with the presence of possessed dolls or kids, it seems the Indian film industry – including Bollywood, is yet to come out of its mythical base with the same old stories of witches and exorcists.

Anyways, 1920 London is no horror but rather a comical love triangle. If you’ve nothing other to watch or you’ve watched Bhatt’s (here the writer) earlier flicks, give it a try but don’t expect horror or any jump-scare from this.

1920 Film Franchise

The 1920 film franchise so far consists of as many as four horror films, including 1920 (2008), 1920: Evil Returns (2012), 1920 London (2016), and 1921 (2018). There is a fifth one announced by the makers. While 1920 and 1921 are written and directed by Vikram Bhatt, he is primarily involved in either producing, directing, or writing the films. The first two films were successful at the box office, while it became quite monotonous to watch such films over and again. Even after a mixed response, the filmmaker is willing to turn the 2018 release film 1921 – a separate franchise. As far as the execution or effects are concerned, these films are heavily inspired by many international films.
