The Invitation (2015) – Thriller Review

Director Karyn Kusama’s psychological thriller “The Invitation” is an incredible example of how you can keep the sense of menace alive in a simple storyline. I watched this without any preconceived idea on the plot while I was only hoping probably it’s one of those many horror films with ghostly entities. This was not; rather it turned out to be a cleverly designed thriller which you would recommend to others.

So, just to put the plot in a few lines, we have here the man Will (Logan Marshall-Green) who along with her girlfriend comes to a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife Eden (Tammy Blanchard) and her new husband David (Michiel Huisman). Upon their arrival at the house, where Will once lived with Eden, he keeps going back to their tragic past of losing their young son in an accidental death.

A few minutes later, Will observed that Eden and David are acting weird in some sense while a few unknown guests in the house too add to his doubts. Then David and Eden told everyone how they had joined a group named “The Invitation” to come out of depression, anger, grief, and let go of the past. They even showed a video of a suicide cult leader comforting a terminally ill patient through the process of suicide.

As all these build up the suspense, Will tries to sense the sinister motives of their host and in the process, he gets paranoid by accusing David and Eden of planting something insane for everyone. So, is Will simply acting weird because of his troubled past or is there anything insidious going on inside the house?

“The Invitation” opens layers of mystery and horror as you keep thinking about the real threat which was completely vague till the last few scenes. Director Kusama very beautifully constructed the onscreen thrill amid Will’s suspicions and paranoia. In addition, the film has different characters to generate enough fear and put you off balance now and then.

Logan Marshall-Green is spot on in his portrayal of Will and those quiet moments, where he kept himself away from others thinking about his son and unalterable past, are simply great. Other actors also very nicely supported the main cast, and the ending of the film is certainly apt to answer all those questions that pile up ever since the beginning of “The Invitation.”
