Parallels (2015) – Promises More, Delivers Less

Director and screenwriter Christopher Leone’s PARALLELS is a science-fiction adventure film that shows a parallel or alternate Earth that can be traveled through mysterious gateways. It follows the lives of estranged brother and sister, Ronan and Beatrix, who met at their home when their father dropped both of them a message to meet him.

When Ronan and Beatrix meet at their home, they couldn’t trace their father. They find a strange, ball-shaped device, inside a bag from their garage. As they try to figure out the whereabouts of their father, Beatrix’s friend Harry who is a public defender joins them to search for their missing father.

They later reach a building from where they discover a gateway to a parallel earth. Now, what they find out is that their family is shattered across multiple Earths. On their journey, they are joined by Polly, a seasoned traveler, who teaches them the ins and outs of jumping from one Earth to another. Ronan and Beatrix ultimately reconnect as they uncover the dark truths behind their family’s broken history.

The concept of the movie seems really interesting, but somehow the ending was not conclusive.  The only issue in PARALLELS is that a film that started with a quiescent note ended on a high point with a lot more promises that could have made it an epic sci-fi flick.

Certainly, if something was originally planned for a television series, it’s difficult to explain everything in a feature-length movie. Besides, you find some characters underdeveloped while others interesting enough to carry the suspense and prospect of something large i.e. truly embedded in such types of movies.
