My Beautiful Broken Brain (2014) – A Must-Watch Documentary

Her brain is broken. Her spirit is limitless. ‘My Beautiful Broken Brain’ is about a 34-year-old woman who suffers a life-threatening brain hemorrhage with outcomes no one could have predicted.

‘My Beautiful Broken Brain’ is an incredible story of rediscovering life. The film documents the traumatic as well as the strange new world of Dutch-French filmmaker Lotje Sodderland after she suffered a brain injury that pushes her into a long journey of rehabilitation and recovery.

The movie is shot as a personal video blog capturing the complexities, fragility, and wonders of the human brain. The first few scenes of the movie give you a hint of what you’re going to watch in the next few minutes, which is emotional, strange, and scary in many senses as you get deeper into the real condition of Lotje.

As Lotje shares in the film, “you’re in this new devastating and extremely scary world, that’s all yours by yourself… It’s like a dream… like a weird parallel trip thing.”

Certainly, to find yourself in a world, where everything is altered, it’s such a very strange process; it’s like everything is new for you, yet you’re familiar with many things. You want to learn the same old things again. This is in the case of Lotje who is now in an alien world bereft of language and logic.

A stroke has changed the life of Lotje forever. She has not lived with her mother since she was 18 years old and now she has to live together at the age of 34. This feature documentary also captures her days inside the hospital as doctors take her through neurological experiments and therapies.

Upon asking why is she video recording everything, Lotje explains that she is of fears that whatever she is experiencing now will get lost. To make sense of the present world, she wants to record it.
