He Never Died (2015) – An Amusing Horror Film

He Never Died is an independent comedy-horror film starring Henry Rollins as a strange loner with cannibalistic tendencies. This is Rollins’ remarkable feature-length acting debut. Sincere to say, I don’t know anything about the guy or his other television roles. However, based solely on this one film, I would grade him as a highly good actor capable of giving convincing performances.

Well, even though I wasn’t particularly interested in watching another vampire movie in the vein of a bloodbath, I found myself hoping from the very first moments that this would be a contemporary crime thriller and bracing myself for any surprise involving vampires.

Here is a synopsis of the film:

He Never Died follows Jack in his battle with cannibalism and mental sobriety. An exceptionally prolonged life has brought depression and detachment. Jack buys stolen blood from a hospital intern, plays bingo, sleeps fourteen hours a day, watches television six hours a day, and lives alone. This is his life – he has shelled himself away from social interactions. The fuse is lit when Jack’s past comes back to rattle him. Jack must now walk a tight rope of sobriety and try to eat as few people as possible in this violent tale of personal responsibility and self-worth. As it turns out, there are very few reasons to live when you can’t die.

The character of a mysterious loner Jack is well sketched and the robotic portrayal further keeps your interest up. Jack certainly has a dark past and to avoid that he sticks to himself, but only to follow his routine life of walking to a nearby diner, playing bingo games, and purchasing blood from a hospital. For the most part, you can see Jack behaves as if he doesn’t care about anything, but when it comes to saving his estranged, 19-year-old daughter, he goes all out.

The majority of us must agree that one of the best scenes in He Never Died is when Jack just recounts the several occupations he has held throughout his life. He has accomplished practically everything, save for being a doctor or astronaut. He is, after all, 150 years old. Rollins does a fantastic job delivering the dialogues.
