‘We Are Still Here’ (2015): A Tense, Frightening & Haunting Ghost Story

We Are Still Here Written & Directed by Ted Geoghegan

After watching quite a few independent horror movies in the last couple of years, I can safely say that there are few filmmakers who can actually come up with an impressive story and concept. Even though ‘We Are Still Here’ is not an independent production, it nowhere tries to overdo things with any usual ghost story or amusingly decorated faces.

Of course, there are few horror movie clichés, but those powerful performances at least drive the movie safely with the idea of not having any jump scares. At least the moment you come to know that there will be nothing frightening to see, you will start enjoying the film. In fact, director-writer Ted Geoghegan very smartly sets the story with a few twists that are pretty much unusual yet good.

So here comes the story:

After their teenage son is killed in a car crash, Paul and Anne move to the New England countryside to try to start a new life. But the grieving couple unknowingly becomes the prey of a family of vengeful spirits that reside in their new home, and before long they discover that the seemingly peaceful town is hiding a terrifyingly dark secret. Now they must find a way to overcome their sorrow and fight back against both the living and dead as the malicious ghosts threaten to pull their souls – and the soul of their lost son – into hell with them. From the producers of The House of the Devil and Cheap Thrills, ‘We Are Still Here’ is a tense, frightening, and thoroughly haunting ghost story.

Overall, the film ‘We Are Still Here’ is not just a haunted house tale but rather very stylish and highly entertaining in a very quaint setup. Sometimes, you may even see a very familiar sequence of events, but it also has its own marks. One thing which many of us may not like is the amount of blood we see on screen; the goriness is there but in a very cleverly written story that justifies what’s happening on screen.
