BABY (2015 Bollywood Hindi Film) – Movie Review

With director Neeraj Pandey’s BABY, Akshay Kumar has yet again proved that he is much better than the Khans when it comes to handling any sensitive issue like ‘terrorism’ or even those typical Bollywood action flicks. After checking out a few critics’ views for this movie, I must say that our media house is full of people who are in some way or other stuck with their own personal and political agendas than giving an unbiased review.

Leaving aside those fellows and their useless ratings, I would like to come straight to the point that BABY is one of those films that has all those ingredients to keep you engaged till the very end. A very carefully written storyline well balanced by a series of exceptional performances and smart direction lets you forget the duration of two and a half plus hours, even in the absence of those usual songs and dance routines.

BABY is a realistic spy thriller that follows a team of secret agency members who works day and night to protect Indian from imminent terror threats. The task force headed by Feroze Ali Khan (Danny Denzongpa) is on a mission to rescue one member of their team from the clutches of terrorists based in Istanbul, Turkey.

Agent Ajay Singh (Akshay Kumar) is given the task to do the job but in the course, he discovers a major threat to our nation. Terror elements across the border are planning to carry out blasts in two of the major Indian cities including Delhi and Mumbai. As days pass by, the elite anti-terror squad must perform two major covert operations in Kathmandu and Abu Dhabi to nab the mastermind behind the terror threats.

How simplistic the story may sound, director Neeraj Pandey has yet again managed to deliver something different in continuation to his earlier success with A Wednesday and Special 26. While there should not be any doubt over the performance of Akshay Kumar, there is more than one character with little screen space, including Kay Kay Menon, Anupam Kher, and Madhurima Tuli, who have done a tremendous job in lifting the script with ease.

It’s apt to mention here the name of a well-known Pakistani actor Rasheed Naz who plays the role of Maulana Abdur Rahman, the man behind one of the world’s deadliest terror groups based in Pakistan. Naz is known in Pakistan for his numerous television plays and is probably best known for his role of extremist Maulana Tahiri in the critically acclaimed Khuda Key Liye.

While the narration of the film is filled with twists and thrills that keep the audience on the edge of their seats till the very end, Sudeep Chatterjee’s cinematography is exceptionally good that zooms in from the narrow streets of Istanbul, the rugged and rustic beauty of Nepal to the sand dunes of Abu Dhabi. Overall, BABY is a treat to watch and a must for those who are missing genuine thrillers in the Hindi film industry.
