‘The Purge: Anarchy’ (Movie Review)

The Purge: Anarchy - A sequel to the first Purge film

The Purge: Anarchy is the sequel to last year’s horror flick The Purge. The new film is a little better with a slight deviation from the original outline, in terms of narratives. In the first part of the series, the Purge was all about middle and upper-class citizens either hiding or purging on the street. The Purge: Anarchy is more focused on the commoners, the have-nots who are actually to be purged as per the basic concept of the film.

The Purge: Anarchy is based on the same premise when the society of a futuristic modern America is all shattered in its twisted notion of government and community management mostly crucifying the poor. The Annual Purge is the night that gives license to everyone to spread mayhem with numerous crimes in the name of getting rid of impurities to establish a just society.

This time writer-director James DeMonaco brings the characters outside the home, particularly on the street, instead of documenting the purge inside the home. Among the new characters: there is a married couple Shane and Liz stranded on the streets after their vehicle breaks down while a mother Eva and daughter Cali are hounded out of their home.

With the announcement of the Annual Purge, they must find a safe place to hide in order to survive the assaults from those out on street with motives to slaughter. Another central character of the film is a mysterious man Leo (played by Frank Grillo) who is also on the street for some reason with his bulletproof car and loads of weapons. As the story of the film brings all of them together, they must find a safe home the earliest possible in this violence-field night.

The Purge: Anarchy adds a new tip to the plot with a gang of people working against the government-sanctioned Annual Purge. In addition, there is also another angle to the story where any one person of a family may even sacrifice his/her life up for money by offering himself/herself to the wealthy lot playing with life.

All in all, both The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy are the products of a provocative idea for a horror film taking the insanity of our modern-day society. Well, writer-director James DeMonaco has successfully documented a thrilling atmosphere with some action and horror encounters. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of this movie franchise, but the whole concept of The Purge is praiseworthy.
