The Appearing (2014) – More Surprises, Less Horror

The Appearing – horror movie review

Don’t know if this is only my view, but these days there are very few horror films that can scare you to death. In fact, horror films with not-so-convincing storylines make those very boring to watch. Nevertheless, films like “The Conjuring”, “Insidious: Chapter 2” and “Mama” are some of the finest horror films of recent times.

Directed by Daric Gates, “The Appearing” is one of those horror films that never catch your attention after the first 30 mins of the film. It’s yet another movie that tries a lot to come close to the kind of The Exorcist (1973), The Possession, and The Conjuring (2013) but failed miserably without an engaging script.

The Appearing – Movie Plot

Detective Michael (Will Wallace) relocates to a small town with his wife Rachel (Emily Brooks) to start a new life after the sudden death of their young daughter. Michael takes his new job in the sheriff’s office thinking not much work in this small town, but on the first day of duty, he is asked to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl.

Michael teams up with Sheriff Hendricks to search for the missing girl and they find out the boyfriend of the missing girl is locked up in a mental hospital. The doctor explains to them that the condition of the boy is because of some evil supernatural entity.

Meanwhile, as Michael tries to understand the whole uncanny situation, he also finds out the disturbed condition of Rachel – being terrorized by some evil force with constant nightmares and terrified visions of a bloodied girl.

While the plot of “The Appearing” is based on the same old horror movie formulae of demonic possession of a living body and haunted house, the story doesn’t offer anything exciting.

Moreover, the acting is too clumsy to add anything positive to an already messy storyline where too many things are running together to create mere confusion. The makers could have focused a little more on the overall experience with elements of tension and terror to make it engaging and believable.
