Into the Storm (2014) – Film Review

Into the Storm 2014 film

First, the reason I wanted to watch Into the Storm is the fact that for long I was waiting for a movie like the 1996 hit disaster drama Twister. No doubt, Twister is an amazing film and so naturally one would now expect something better.

However, I find the recently released Into the Storm a little over the top, although we know that storms in various parts of the world have been observed as extremely violent and deadly.

Just like any other natural disaster film, the film is also based on the same concept that we have limited scientific knowledge about the origin of storms like tornados, cyclones or typhoons.

In the advance metrological sciences, although these can be predicted to a reasonable degree, damage to property cannot be mitigated much. Nevertheless, such natural disasters have been a subject of interest by filmmakers.

Director Steven Quale’s Into the Storm starts as a found-footage thriller where most of the characters are documenting the effects of tornados even in very grim situations.

While in Twister there were scientists who were chasing the tornados in order to obtain more information for further use in the metrological science, here in this film there are a few crazy videographers who are trying to create the next viral video.

Probably, the lack of motives in chasing tornados lets the realism down, and partly the scientific explanation. Nonetheless, the graphics and special effects are incredible where you start believing the possible devastating energy, power, and destruction by Mother Nature.

The other thing that makes Into the Storm different is that there is much close-up footage than any other twister-kind movies.

Finally, I must mention that we love natural disaster films that bring both curiosity and fear with tornados, hurricanes, tsunami, earthquakes, etc. Knowing these facts, one certainly watches movies like Into the Storm only to realize or sense the destructive power of nature.

The movie could have been better if the storyline had better characterization and compelling narratives.
