Diary of a Nymphomaniac (2008) – More Than Just An Erotic Drama

Diary of a Nymphomaniac (2008)

Diary of a Nymphomaniac – I’m a promiscuous woman, yes, because I want to use sex as a means to find what everyone is looking for. Recognition, pleasure, self-esteem, and, in short, love, and affection. What’s pathological about that? If you want to give me a name, go on. I don’t mind. But you must know that I’m really a mermaid, a dryad, simply a nymph.

This is the epilogue of the Spanish erotic drama Diary of a Nymphomaniac (Diario de una ninfómana) directed by Christian Molina and starring Belen Fabra in lead. The film is based on the intimate diary of a nymphomaniac (dictionary meaning – a woman with excessive or abnormal sexual desire).

Valere or Val (Belen Fabra), a young woman now 28, has a strong desire for sex ever since she first experienced this when she was only 15. With an unquenchable sexual appetite and high-level erotic curiosity with a never-ending urge to have sex, Val ends up working as a prostitute which propels her to bed many men in secretive or illicit sexual relationships.

Diary of a Nymphomaniac shows how the young woman Val abandons her education and profession only for the pleasure of sex. It was certainly not an act of making money rather it’s something which she was even ready to do it for free.

The movie is realistic and provocative, but at times you may even find this as a manipulative melodrama. The biggest flaw of this film is that it doesn’t bring the story into the pace and the excessive sexual acts, even though essential, somehow interrupt the narrative. Also, nowhere did it try to focus some of its male characters other than their reprehensible actions, which is indeed a subject of dissension.

Nevertheless, Diary of a Nymphomaniac is not just an erotic drama, but a film with certain human nature that certainly pushes you into a deep character study and even to advocate individuality.
